As Spain moves closer to the 1 January 2026 deadline for the introduction of mandatory connected V16 emergency lights, concerns are mounting over widespread sales of non-compliant models. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of older devices have already been sold across the country, despite repeated warnings from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT).

Under the new rules, only V16 lights certified and connected to the DGT 3.0 platform will be permitted. These devices automatically transmit the vehicle’s geolocation in real time, alerting authorities and emergency services the moment they are activated. The DGT has made its stance clear: “From 1 January 2026, only V16 lights that transmit the vehicle’s geolocation in real time to the DGT 3.0 platform will be authorised.”

The change is designed to boost roadside safety, reducing the risks drivers face when exiting their vehicles to place traditional warning triangles or non-connected devices. However, the continued sale of “analogue” V16 lights throughout 2025 has created a potential problem for motorists who may unknowingly purchase devices that will soon become illegal.

Drivers found using non-compliant V16 units after the deadline could face fines of up to €200. To avoid this, motorists are strongly advised to check for official DGT certification before buying, which can be confirmed through the DGT’s website.

With the clock ticking, Spain’s transition to the connected V16 system is set to be one of the most significant road safety changes in recent years—offering greater protection on the highways, but also demanding extra vigilance from drivers to ensure their equipment meets the new standard.
