In recent days Telefónica has removed the public payphone boxes from the municipality. A total of four have been removed in line with a nationwide dismantling of the public payphone system.
Data has revealed that their usage has declined in recent years, with 88% of the population acknowledging that they have never used a public payphone.
At the end of 2019 there were some 16,000 payphones in the country, but now Spain is following the example of many of its neighbouring countries and phasing them out completely.
The fact that the majority of people now possess mobile phones has been cited for their redundancy.
