Every year on 16th July, the coastal towns of Sabinillas and Castillo de la Duquesa come alive with colour, devotion, and maritime pageantry as they celebrate the feast of the Virgen del Carmen—the beloved patron saint of fishermen and sailors.

Rooted in centuries-old legend, the tradition stems from the Carmelite monks of Mount Carmel, who worshipped the Virgin Mary after she appeared to them in a vision. When forced to flee during a Saracen invasion, the Virgin reappeared, promising to be their “Star of the Sea,” guiding them to safety. This enduring image of protection and guidance over the seas lives on in the hearts of fishing communities across Spain, particularly in the south where maritime life is central to local identity.

In Castillo, the Virgen del Carmen is not only the protector of seafarers but also the town’s patron saint. Her feast day is marked by two emotive and symbolic maritime processions. The first takes place on the beach at Sabinillas, where the statue of the Virgen is carried to a fishing boat amid great ceremony—often a dramatic sight, especially if the waves are challenging. The second begins in the Port of Duquesa, where a second statue is similarly honoured. From there, a flotilla of fishing and leisure boats, both sacred and festive, accompany the Virgins along the coast, parading between the Salt Tower and Punta Chullera.

The celebrations blend faith and local pride, with each boat ride serving as both tribute and prayer for safe seas and fruitful catches. Should the Mediterranean turn temperamental—particularly under strong easterly winds—the processions adapt: in Sabinillas, the Virgen may be carried along the beach instead of into the water, while the Castillo Virgen remains in Duquesa Port.

Whether on sea or shore, the devotion remains unshaken. The Virgen del Carmen festival is not just a religious observance; it’s a powerful reflection of the coastal community’s bond with the sea—and the spiritual protection they seek within it.
