The introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) has been postponed, with the system now scheduled to become operational in the final quarter of 2026. ETIAS will require visa-exempt travelers, including British nationals, to secure online travel authorisation prior to entering Schengen Area countries. The ETIAS authorisation will remain valid for three years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever occurs first, and will permit multiple short-term visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The online application process will include submitting personal and travel details, along with a €7 fee for applicants aged between 18 and 70.

Following several delays, the Entry-Exit System (EES) is set to launch in October 2025, representing a key milestone toward the implementation of ETIAS. The EES is a biometric system that will record the entry and exit of non-EU citizens, enhancing the EU’s ability to track and manage overstays. The EU has opted for a phased implementation approach instead of an immediate full rollout.

Residents possessing a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) will not need ETIAS authorisation. However, the British government advises residents still using the older green residency cards to upgrade to the biometric TIE, as the older cards will not be recognized by the new EES software.

Given previous postponements, travelers should consistently consult official EU channels for the latest updates regarding ETIAS.
