Darkness Into Light

Darkness Into Light is a global movement and annual fundraising event organized by the Irish charity Pieta. Held at dawn each May, participants walk or run 5 kilometers as the sun rises, symbolizing the journey from despair to hope for those impacted by suicide and self-harm.

The first Darkness Into Light event took place in 2009 in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, with 400 participants. Since then, it has grown into an international event, with over 150,000 participants annually across more than 200 locations worldwide, including Ireland, the UK, Australia, and the United States.

Funds raised support Pieta’s free, 24/7 services, including crisis helplines, therapy, and bereavement support for individuals and families affected by suicide. In 2024, Pieta reported receiving 100,000 calls and texts to its crisis helpline and providing nearly 52,000 hours of therapy.

Darkness Into Light is more than a fundraiser; it’s a powerful act of solidarity. Communities come together to remember those lost, support those struggling, and raise awareness about mental health. The event continues to grow, bringing hope and light to those in darkness.
