Seismic specialists

The Junta de Andalucía, in coordination with the Government of Spain, organised an information briefing to share clear, evidence-based updates with municipalities in the Serranía de Ronda following reports of noises, ground movement and seismic activity in recent days.

Scientists from the CSIC and the National Geographic Institute (IGN) explained that what has been observed falls within normal parameters. They stressed that there is no scientific evidence linking these phenomena to the recent persistent rainfall, nor to any unusual rise in seismic activity.

According to the experts, the noises reported are consistent with aquifers filling and resulting changes in underground pressure, while the seismicity recorded is typical for this area and generally low to moderate.

The meeting, chaired by the Junta’s Government Delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, also included a call for calm and underlined the importance of coordination between administrations, so that residents receive official information grounded in science and communicated in accessible language.

The IGN installed a temporary seismic monitoring station in Casares last Saturday, along with others in nearby municipalities. The equipment will remain in place for around a month to improve tracking and pinpointing of seismic activity across the zone.

The local authorities will continue to keep residents updated through its official channels, while maintaining close coordination with emergency services and the scientific teams.
