With the height of Spring upon us and the weather settling down, nature is at its busiest with a burst of activity from both flora and fauna.
It is a particularly important time for those plants and animals that are at risk of disappearing locally, amongst them the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), those tiny birds that you often see in groups running along the shoreline, dodging the water whilst hunting for small invertebrates in the sand.
These birds are ground nesting, and breed in the vegetation on the margins of some of our beaches, making them particularly vulnerable to disturbance by beachgoers and dog walkers.
To that effect the local authorities have put up signs advising about the presence of these birds, and asking the public to avoid these areas during the nesting season, which is during April, May and June.
