For many foreign residents living in Andalucía, retirement in southern Spain brings sunshine, a relaxed lifestyle and a strong sense of community. What many people do not realise, however, is that the Junta de Andalucía also offers a free benefits card designed specifically for over-65s — and foreign residents can apply too.

Known officially as the “Tarjeta Andalucía Junta sesentaycinco”, or more simply the Tarjeta 65, the scheme provides a range of discounts and support services aimed at helping older residents enjoy a better quality of life while reducing everyday costs.

Although widely used by Spanish pensioners, many expatriates living on the Costa del Sol remain unaware that they may also be entitled to the card.

Discounts and practical benefits

The Tarjeta 65 offers discounts and special conditions across a number of areas that are particularly useful for retired residents.

Depending on the type of card issued, benefits may include reduced fares on regional bus services, discounts on glasses and hearing aids, lower prices for cultural activities and organised trips, as well as support services designed to help older people continue living independently at home.

There are also agreements with participating opticians, healthcare providers and businesses offering products and services aimed at senior citizens.

For residents who regularly travel around Andalucía or who require hearing or optical support, the savings can quickly add up over time.

Two types of card

The Junta issues two versions of the Tarjeta 65.

The green card is available to all eligible residents aged over 65 living in Andalucía.

The gold version is intended for pensioners or lower-income residents who meet certain financial criteria and may provide access to additional discounts and benefits.

Importantly, the card is free and does not need to be renewed once issued.

Who can apply?

Foreign residents are eligible provided they are legally resident in Andalucía and registered on the local padrón.

Applicants must be aged 65 or over and will normally need to provide identification such as a passport or NIE certificate together with proof of address. Those applying for the gold card may also need to show pension or income documentation.

Applications can be made online through the Junta de Andalucía website or in person via local social services offices and administrative assistance centres.

A useful resource for the international community

With thousands of retired foreign residents living across the Costa del Sol, the Tarjeta 65 remains one of Andalucía’s lesser-known benefits schemes within the international community.

While no single discount is likely to transform household finances, the combination of transport savings, healthcare-related discounts and leisure benefits can make a genuine difference over the course of a year.

For many older residents, it is simply another example of the practical support available to those who have chosen Andalucía as their home.
