Casares will welcome filmmakers, film lovers and aspiring creators from 2 to 10 October 2026 for the 13th Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz, with a programme combining screenings, workshops, photography and industry discussions.
Dedicated entirely to cinema made in Andalucía, this year’s festival features five fiction films, five feature documentaries and 19 short films in its official competition sections. Supported by Casares Town Hall, the event offers audiences a chance to discover new work and meet the people behind it.
The Centro Cultural Blas Infante in Casares Pueblo will host the official short-film screenings and closing gala. Admission to festival screenings is free, subject to capacity, although the opening Cortos Exprés sessions require tickets.
Local locations take centre stage
The festival opens with the results of its popular Cortos Exprés challenge. A record 44 teams completed films during a 48-hour filmmaking weekend, involving 232 participants across Casares Pueblo, Casares Costa and Secadero.
Each team had to produce a film lasting no more than eight minutes and incorporate an action connected with recycling or protecting the environment. Local streets, homes, the castle, coastline and Baños de la Hedionda all provided settings for the stories. The films will also be available on the festival’s YouTube channel from 11 pm on Saturday, 3 October.
Films and filmmakers
The feature programme includes two premieres, La priora and Caballero Bonald. Fragmentos de navegante. Other selections range from drama and comedy to films exploring tourism, identity, literature and music.
Among the fiction highlights, Pioneras. Solo querían jugar follows young women challenging the barriers to playing football in 1970s Spain, while Auri centres on a woman discovering a new sense of freedom at 65. Members of the filmmaking teams will introduce the fiction films and join discussions after the screenings.
Screening programme
There are daily screenings at 6-6.30 and 9 pm throughout the festival
Workshops and awards
Director and screenwriter Santi Amodeo will lead a filmmaking course from 5 to 7 October, running from 9 am to 2 pm at the Casa de la Juventud in Plaza Marcelino Camacho. Focusing on developing a screenplay into a film project, the course costs €150. Enquiries and applications should be sent to nuevocineandaluz@gmail.com.
The wider programme includes educational talks by production designer Pepe Domínguez del Olmo, an exhibition of 30 shortlisted photographs and a CINA discussion about screenwriting. Actress and theatre creator Alessandra García will host the closing gala, when the festival’s Pajarracos de Plata awards will be presented.
