Bird ringing in Manilva

Conservation of the biodiversity in Manilva’s natural environment is a top priority for the Environmental Department, according to Councillor Noelia Muñoz. In close collaboration with the Ornithological Group of the Strait (GOES), a conservation plan for birds of prey is currently being developed.

The booted eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), a medium-sized bird of prey, migrates from Africa to Europe each spring via the Strait of Gibraltar and nests in Manilva. There are currently a total of four pairs of this species in our area.

GOES is actively engaged in a study and conservation project for the booted eagle. Muñoz recently joined the ornithologists for a scientific bird-ringing session, where they ringed two chicks from one of the nests near Manilva.
